A Short History of Medicine
September 3, 2009
Medicine means different things to different people. Like clothing, some trends come back.
Consider the recommendations of doctors, healers, and other medicine people over time:
-
2000 BCE – “Here, eat this root.”
1000 CE – “That root is heathen; say this prayer.”
1850 CE – “That prayer is superstition; drink this potion.”
1940 CE – “That potion is snake oil; swallow this pill.”
1985 CE – “That pill is ineffective; take this antibiotic.”
2000 CE – “That antibiotic is artificial. Here, eat this root!”
